The book Rules of Work by Richard Templar has beautiful advise for you if you are a serious Future Leader. There are ten of them, and we already presented the first four. Here are the next two:
RULE FIVE – LOOK AFTER YOURSELF
v Know the ethics of your industry or government.
v Know the legalities of your industry or governance.
v Set personal standards - you must endeavour to be the very best you can at all times.
v Never lie - you are allowed to talk up your qualities or skills or expertise; just don’t actually tell a lie.
v Never cover up lies for anyone else.
v Keep records.
v Know the difference between the Truth and the Whole Truth.
v Cultivate your support/contacts/friends.
v Understand other persons’ motives - anybody whose motives show up to be Needs and Fear and Greed should be treated carefully.
v Assume everyone else is playing by different rules - the rule book you now have must remain a secret. If you reveal your rules you have broken the rules.
RULE SIX – BLEND IN
v Know the Corporate Culture - you don’t have to buy into the corporate culture (you don’t have to believe in it); all you have to do is fit in.
v Speak the Language - if they all use geeky language, then you too must use it.
v Be adaptable in your dealings with different people
v Know where to hang out and when - get your face known, get your name known.
v Understand the Social Protocol.
v Know the rules about Authority – you may be working where the real power resides in the hands of a consultant, a secretary, a junior manager.
v Know the rules about Office Hierarchy - Office protocols and hierarchies are old fashioned, petty, small minded, outdated and yet still very much with us.
v Never disapprove of others.
v Understand the |Herd Mentality - never clone or lose all sense of your individuality even while blending in.
