Have you read Rules of Work by Richard Templar? Beautiful advise to you if you are a serious Future Leader. There are ten of them, and we already presented the first two. Here are the next two:
RULE THREE – HAVE A PLAN
- Know What You Want Long Term
- You have to have an end game – a dream
- Know What You Want Short Term
- Deadlines, prioritized tasks, basic routines
- Study Promotion System
- Look upwards to the most senior position possible
- Look at the lowest
- Plot all the steps in between
- Mark your own place
- List the steps needed to get to the most senior possible
- Develop a Game Plan
- Set Objectives
- It is almost impossible to be successful if you don’t set objectives
- Know Your Role
- Your role is how you fit into the team
- Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses
- Identify Key Times and Events
- There is no point using all your energy and power when it isn’t necessary
- Anticipate Threats
- Each threat that becomes a reality is an opportunity to grow and change
- Look for opportunities and learn to see opportunities as balls – if they get thrown your way, you have but a split second to catch them.
RULE FOUR – IF YOU CAN’T SAY ANYTHING NICE, SHUT UP
- Don’t Gossip. There is one part of this rule which is really, really simple: don’t pass anything on
- Don’t Bitch
- Moaning is pointless. It is unproductive and achieves nothing
- Compliment People Sincerely
- Be Cheerful and Positive
- Ask Question
- Use “Please” and “Thank You” a lot
- Don’t Swear. You may say anything you want at home, or in the car on your own. But at work, you don’t swear
- Be a Good Listener Good listening is a skill, a special talent that you will have to practice and learn
- Only Speak Sense. There are times when all the hard work can be devastated, destroyed, by a careless word or unguarded moment.
