Problem Definition

Injunction of the gods was: Whoever could loosen the Gordon’s Tie would be the one to conquer Mesopotamia (approximately modern day Iraq). The conqueror of Mesopotamia would be one to rule the world (as then known).

 

Alexandre was young (in his 20s) ambitious, immensely successful as a soldier, but hadn’t conquered Mesopotamia. He took on the Gordon’s Tie challenge but for months couldn’t loosen the rope. In fact, for centuries no one had been able to loosen the complicated tie.

 

Then an idea struck Alexandre. The gods’ injunction, he told himself, was to loosen the rope tie, and not that the gods decreed HOW. So, he pulled out his sword and lashed it relentlessly at the rope until the tie was shattered and loosened.

 

Alexandre did conquer Mesopotamia, subsequently ruled the known world and became
